A Fusion of Filipino and Japanese Cuisine in Soho
Ramo Ramen is a Halal Filipino-Japanese fusion restaurant located in Soho. My experience there was also a fusion of good and not good because I found the ramen to be disappointing. If their restaurant name is screaming Ramen, they should be good at it.
However, there were some good dishes with creative menus, and I appreciate the attempt to combine Filipino and Japanese cuisine. Just I do not think it was executed well in their ramen dish. Their interior was also just fine. They should make cosier tables if they allow customers to stay 1.5 hours.
What I ordered:
The King’s Temaki
My most favorite dish from the night. They used southeastern style spicy sauce with a Japanese Temaki (Japanese rice with a seaweed) in a good way. I liked it more than original Japanese Temaki. The big size of shrimp and flavorful sauce… It was a fun dish.
It is pity that they were serving it only for King’s coronation period, but it was a special dish as King Charles.
Black Angus Bistek Donburi
This dish surprised me as it was better than I was expecting. When I see Angus beef on a menu, I initially thought the meat was tough and chewy, so not going to be merged well with egg yolk. We use Wagyu in Japan to make a good donburi dish. However, the beef was fine and all (the rice, the egg yolk, and the beef) made harmony in my mouth. I assume the secret was the caramelized onion. Donburi is a Japanese dish but we don’t use caramelized onion, so bravo for a great touch of Ramo.
Kikurage Israel
This dish should have been the best one, however, this Ramen disappointed me. They just put some vegetables on a not-really spicy creamy soup. The broth lacked the richness and complexity that I expect from good ramen.
Japanese eat ramen after drinking, but who wants this not high calory soup at midnight? I must say it must be difficult to make a good Ramen with Halal though.
Also, I don’t get why it is called Israel either. If anyone knows, would be appreciated to tell me.
Conclusion:
If you are looking for an authentic ramen in that area, I would not recommend here, but this restaurant has built their own spot in London restaurant market as they are unique.
Overall, I found this restaurant a better Filipino restaurant than Japanese. To make this state more trustable, their sister place serves really good Filipino desserts and is always so crowded. I LOVE it too! You can check https://www.instagram.com/mamasonsdirtyicecream/.
