Mediterranean Magic at Bankside
Dear reader, have you just embarked on a fabulous new romantic adventure and now you’re thinking of introducing your swoon-worthy date to your bestie? Maybe you’re planning a double date, something that’s not too casual but not too posh either? And, oh, is one of your diners a veggie lover?
Well, sit yourself down with a cup of tea and dive into this blog, because guess what? Bala Baya is THE place you’ve been dreaming of. Their menu is full of twists and turns that challenge every culinary expectation you’ve ever had. They’re all about pushing boundaries and encouraging you to embrace the unexpected.
Ambiance:
Bala Baya had the great mixed vibe – like being in the middle of a bustling Mediterranean marketplace, but with a touch of that chic London modern coolness.
If you perch yourself on the grand floor, you’re in for a treat. Right before your eyes, there’s this lively open kitchen where the chefs are working their magic, and you can practically feel the foodie symphony in the air.
But the second floor is where the real charm is at. It’s this cozy haven with industrial-meets-rustic décor that just speaks to my soul. (As you see from the featured image!)
Service:
The service was on point. The staff was my trusty guide, making sure every flavor note was on fleek. In a world where service can sometimes be a bit meh, Bala Baya’s team brought their A-game.
Drink:
Whether you’re in the mood for a glamorous cocktail or a sophisticated glass of wine, Bala Baya has got you covered.
Price: ££
“Hey, come join the flavor fiesta without worrying about your wallet.” It’s basically an invitation to indulge in a Mediterranean feast without feeling guilty.
What I Ordered:
14 Carat Hummus
First, can we just take a moment to appreciate that attractive Habibi name? I mean, seriously, it’s like the restaurant version of a love interest.
Then I have got to spill the tea about their 14 Carat Hummus. The spiced carrot base was pure genius. I’m talking velvety perfection with a subtle sweetness that takes traditional hummus to a whole new level. The carrot & orange jam was the sweet surprise that had me going back for dip after dip.
But, also we have got to talk about the zesty lemon and the somewhat deflated Pita bread. The Pita was like a pillow that’s been half used – still comfy, but you crave the full fluffiness.
Aubergine Mess
So, there’s this beautifully charcoaled aubergine stealing the spotlight, bringing a smoky depth that’s just swoon-worthy. And that Tahini and lychee combo was a burst of sweetness and juiciness, a totally unexpected twist that had me doing a double-take.
But, and there was always a but at Bala Baya, I felt like there was this undercover sour agent in the mix. It was playing a role that I wasn’t entirely vibing with. Like, why are you bringing sour vibes to this sweet party.
Cauliflower Steak Crumble
The cauliflower steak was cooked to perfection. Tender on the inside, yet crispy and golden on the outside – and the smoked parmesan crumble? Absolute genius. The texture brought this whole new level of complexity, turning each bite into a symphony of flavors.
But… Let’s chat about the lime yogurt. It had this strong citrusy zing that just went all out, overpowering the creamy cauliflower and the glorious cheese. I found myself playing the part of a yogurt-removing ninja.
Brisket Doughnut
I was expecting a brisket with a touch of sweetness with rich and heavy goodness. But, the zesty flavor issue came into play again. I wasn’t quite ready for that level of zestiness from every dish.
Their brisket had this unexpected smoky intensity from the orange-spiced jus. It kind of stole the richness of the brisket, playing a little too hard to be refreshing.
Here’s the real heartbreak – because, the Moroccan doughnuts were the true stars. From their pillowy texture to that subtle sweetness, they were like little bites of sugary heaven. It’s a pity the brisket couldn’t follow in their sweet, sweet footsteps.
*Kebab Dumplings
This dish was a flavor rollercoaster that whisked me away to the lively streets of the Levant with every single, delightful bite.
The meat, had a poetic dance of shawarma spice – robust, intoxicating, and pure magic. The dumplings were cradling the lamb’s richness in this textural symphony. Firmness gave way to pillowy softness.
In the grand saga of Bala Baya’s flavors, this dish was a true hero – a tale of textures, aromas, and flavors that transported me to a world of Levantine delight.
Conclusion:
In a city bursting with foodie wonders, this place stands out, offering a modern twist on Israeli cuisine that’s practically a flavor explosion – and yes, they’ve got some veggie-friendly magic up their sleeves too.
Sure, there were a few hiccups involving citrus fruits, but Bala Baya is all about delivering a dining experience that’s etched in your memory, with innovative dishes.
So, gather your favourites, and let Chef Eran Tibi whisk you away into a world of unique and unconventional pairings. You might just fall head over heels in love – with the food, of course! Just be careful not to become a ‘mistress’ like what Bala Baya means!
Oh, and their sister restaurant Kapara? I may have a soft spot for it…
