A Carnivore’s Paradise
Skewer and Beer totally owns the game when it comes to a legit Chinese culinary masterpiece. It is chilling right by Chinatown, and this spot is like a carnivore’s paradise. The vibes here hit different, and giving you a mood that you hungry for round two.
If you’re not familiar with Chinese skewers, in China, they are predominantly found on bustling streets and night markets, served as street food from food stalls. Typically consisting of heavily spiced, barbecued foods on skewers, this popular culinary delight is available in almost all cities across China.
Ambiance:
The vibes in there were lit and perfect for a hype gathering with your friends. What is cool is that you really feel the China vibes, and they let you peep the kitchen action as those skewers sizzle on the grill.
I must say they could level up in a few areas. The seating situation was not great – just these long wooden chairs with no back support. I mean, I am not in my 20s forever. And no spot for my coat and bag? Plus, that spice and garlic smell was everywhere; they should hook up a cloakroom so your stuff doesn’t come out smelling like a spice rack. I know at the same time that this is the Chinese style though!
Service:
The service was like getting a warm welcome back home in China. The staff was not fancy vibe but all about that quick and lively hustle. You have to be in the zone, hit them up, and they’re all over it – quick, no frills, just the way we like it.
Drinks:
They call themselves Skewer and Beer, but real talk, their beer game was weak. The alcohol choices were slim, and the prices? Man, they’re hitting you with that triple whammy.
Price:
Even though the prices are bit much compared to back home in Asia, you have to give it to them –the food here was authentic. They are not robbing you; it’s just that London living.
This spot proves you can have a legit culinary adventure without maxing out your card. Asia’s got that budget game strong, no doubt about it.
What I Ordered:
Skewers
Those skewers were like a flavor explosion in my mouth! It was not that delicate, subtle vibe – more like a blast of strong spice and garlic hitting you. Some of the meats were a bit too fatty for my taste, but the overall lineup was solid.
What’s cool is you get to flex your taste buds with all sorts of meats and parts – keeps things interesting.
And, watching those meats do their thing on the grill was low-key enjoyable. Like, it’s a whole show happening right in front of you. Good vibes all around.
Veggies
They went all out on the heat, maybe more than they really needed.Veggies are chill on their own, not as in-your-face as seafood or meat. They went all out on the heat, maybe more than they really needed.
Chicken Middle Wing
Each wing, perfectly marinated, was like a taste sensation, mixing up those savory vibes with just the right kick of spice. The seasoning got into every nook and cranny, making every single bite an epic flavor adventure.
Lamb Ribs
The flavors were marrying the rich, gamey essence of lamb with a masterfully balanced blend of spices. Each bite was a journey through layers of smokiness, tenderness, and a hint of char from the grill.
Also, the seasoning was spot-on, enhancing the natural goodness of the lamb without overpowering its inherent taste.
Chicken Dumplings
They steamed it up real nice, the sauce was not my taste– but just a personal thing.
Fried Rice
The way they threw down on that fried rice was straight-up authentic. And that hint of sweetness from the pork? Totally nailed that Chinese flavor. On point!
Fried Noodle
This dish was fire, no doubt. A tad on the oily side, but they nailed it with the spice, and those noodles were total Asian vibes.
*Steamed Bun
I was totally feeling it! My absolute go-to dish—I can never resist ordering it when it pops up on the menu. That crispy exterior and the super soft inside? Straight-up top-notch!
Conclusion:
So, in a nutshell, if you’re a Londoner looking for a food adventure of authentic Chinese food an also a vibe, Skewer and Beer is the move.
I personally more into the cozy and relaxing dining experience, but if you are ready to dive into that carnivore’s paradise – it’s all happening at Skewer and Beer. Otherwise my favorite restaurant in China Town is Joy King Lau.
Tips from Hanako:
- Don’t wear something you can’t toss in the wash, because it’s gonna come out smelling all garlicky.
- Booking ahead.
- They do not have a menu, but hit them up and they’ll hand you a touchpad to pick your eats.
- If it’s your skewer debut, ask them to give you the heads up when it’s ready to chow down.
- Grab some side dishes because those skewers are on the smaller side
