Gourmet Prelude
Situated in the bustling heart of Covent Garden, London, Prelude by Oriole isn’t just a cocktail bar—it embodies a flavor and the art of dining. Oriole’s return has shaken up the culinary scene with its own unique flair and style.
Ambiance:
The interior exuded chic sophistication, with an effortlessly cool vibe and just the right amount of edge, accentuated by Asian-inspired decor. Soft lighting set the mood, while the buzz of conversation and live music added to the electric energy in the air.
Although the vibe eaned towards a casual brunch vibe rather than a typical bar concept, it still exuded a welcoming atmosphere.
Service:
It’s top-notch, without a doubt. Reminiscent of Italian hospitality. The staff were attentive, ensuring that every need was met with style and finesse. They were knowledgeable, friendly, and always ready to ensure guests felt comfortable.
From the moment I sat down to the moment I reluctantly leave, I was treated like royalty—and honestly, who doesn’t love that?
Probably better to tell you an episode. A guy was trying to squeeze in next to us and accidentally spilled my wine. The Italian staff immediately came with napkins and also replaced my glass…I was just amazed.
Drinks:
The cocktails were exceptional! You know when it is smooth and easy to drink, that means it is a good one.
Price: ££
The price was reasonable for the innovative drinks and dishes offered. However, it’s worth noting that the food portions were quite small.
What I Ordered:
*Chickpea Chips, Aioli
If you’re tired of the same old potato chips and dip, then allow me to introduce you to a game-changer. This dish takes the humble chickpea to new heights, transforming it into a crispy, flavour-packed snack that’s downright addictive.
The chips were meticulously arranged in a tantalizing stack, alongside a dollop of aioli, creamy and inviting, just waiting to be dipped into.
One bite into these chickpea chips, and I was hooked. The texture was unlike anything you’ve experienced before—crispy on the outside, yet surprisingly light and airy on the inside. It’s a delightful contrast that keeps you coming back for more, chip after chip.
But what about the taste, you ask? Fear not, because these chickpea chips delivered on flavour in spades. Seasoned to perfection with a blend of herbs that hit all the right notes, they were downright addictive. Of course, I ordered twice!
Mushroom, Huitlacoche, Egg Yolk
This dish captivated with its artful presentation. Then, the flavors in this dish were nothing short of exquisite. The earthy umami of the mushrooms was complemented beautifully by the rich, earthy notes of the huitlacoche, creating a depth of flavor that was both comforting and complex.
And when the silky yolk was gently pierced and allowed to mingle with the other ingredients, it added a luxurious creaminess that tied everything together in perfect harmony.
I absolutely loved the crunchy bread on the side as well!
*Pumpkin, Peanut Sambal, Green Curry Ice Cream
It offered a flavor experience unlike any other. The sweetness of the roasted pumpkin mingled harmoniously with the creamy richness of the green curry ice cream, creating taste sensations.
Additionally, the peanut sambal provided a delightful crunch, adding depth and dimension to every bite. Who would think of curry ice cream? Just genius.
Duck, Orange Mole, Tamal
The presentation was beautiful, but unfortunately, the taste fell a bit short. I felt it did not have a cohesive idea as a whole dish.
The duck had a slightly chewy texture. And the orange mole was missing the bold flavors that were supposed to complement the duck. Furthermore, the tamal side had a gooey texture and an overwhelming corn flavor.
Burnt Macha Cheesecake
It wasn’t bad, but it was definitely overcooked—the side was literally burnt. However, it still had a good flavor inside. Also, I wasn’t sure if the sauce matched well with the cheesecake; I enjoyed them separately.
Conclusion:
So there you have it: Prelude by Oriole London is a culinary playground where passion and flavor collide in the most delicious way possible as a cocktail place. While I didn’t enjoy a few dishes, the rest were exceptional. I must commend them for being a cocktail bar that still provides amazing flavors. And the top quality service!
