How Milan Stole My Hearts
Greetings in Milan, a city that effortlessly blends a rich cultural heritage with an exquisite culinary scene that captivates discerning palates. Milan has forever been the epitome of my dreams, a city where my heart beats to the rhythm of fashion. Yes, you’ve unraveled the layers; I’m not merely a connoisseur of great cuisine but a fervent admirer of style and couture.
In this guide, I’ll take you on a delightful journey through some of the must-visit spots in Milan, each offering a unique gastronomic experience.
Bar Luce: A Wes Anderson Wonderland
Wes Anderson designing a cafe located in the Fondazione Prada. That’s Bar Luce for you. It’s not just a coffee spot; it’s a cinematic experience. Sip on carefully brewed coffee, nibble on pastries, and soak up the retro vibes of the 1950s and 1960s. Because coffee tastes better when it’s served with a side of whimsy.

DG Martini: Missed Classic Italian Elegance
My Milan trip started with a warm welcome from a huge D&G ad at Milan Central station and concluded with yet another massive ad at Milan Malpensa airport. Somehow, D&G has secured its spot in my Milan travel memories, with DG Martini being one of them.
It is located next to the largest D&G store I stepped into, exuding a cool vibe with all the red lights. Unfortunately, this venue lacked the expected Italian charm inside with all the cheap but tacky space. It’s disheartening to see both Milan and D&G lose their definition of timeless Italian elegance here. However, it could still offer a good experience for tourists, and their drinks were nothing short of divine.

Giacomo Rosticceria: Comfort Food, Italian Style
Giacomo Rosticceria is where comfort food gets a Milanese upgrade. Picture rotisserie-style perfection – succulent meats, savory sides, and desserts that would make your grandma jealous. The ambiance? Cozy as your nonna’s home. It’s comfort food, but with great service and top-notch quality, all taken to the next level. I strongly recommend paying a visit.

Antica Focacceria San Francesco: A Sicilian Feast
Transport yourself to the sunny streets of Sicily at Antica Focacceria San Francesco. Indulge in authentic focaccia, arancini, and a taste of true Sicilian hospitality. The warm atmosphere will make you feel like you’ve just stepped into a Sicilian kitchen.
Their Pasta c’anciova rossa convinced me to plan a visit to Sicily next summer. I can’t help but feel a twinge of jealousy for all the Milanese who can enjoy this for their work lunch. We Londoners working in the Bank area should have this as an option for our work rights.

Tips from Hanako
- You can walk to most places within a 25-minute radius, and it takes the same amount of time if you use public transportation.
- No cappuccino after lunch, as you know! It’s only acceptable in the morning. And if you order Americano, some place serve espresso with a hot water. (Make your own Americano)
- The prices are similar to those in London, so it’s not cheap, but the quality is much better even for take-away.
- Usually, the appetizer is a generous portion, and there is no salt, pepper, or olive oil on the table unless you specifically request them. My apologies for the preconception!
- Most places will provide you with free water, even if it’s sparkling. I missed non-tap water!
