A Sizzling Romance with Authentic Chinese Flavours
Gouqi promises an authentic culinary journey, combining techniques and ingredients from across China, marking Chef Tong’s return to the London restaurant scene.
As a dedicated fan of Chinese cuisine, I was eager to sample what this restaurant had to offer, and I was not disappointed.
Haven’t heard of Chef Tong?
Chef Tong
He was an Executive Chef at the famous Hakkasan, developing Chinese cuisine in Asia and London. Under his leadership, Hakkasan Group became the global leader in contemporary Chinese cuisine, with Hakkasan, Yauatcha, and HKK all winning Michelin stars.
Ambiance:
Gouqi boasts a modern and stylish interior, creating an inviting atmosphere, although I found it lacked the distinctive ambiance typically associated with Chinese dining. Instead, it featured a décor reminiscent of the conventional London style.
They offer two elegant private rooms accommodating a maximum of 20 guests each, along with upscale semi-private sofa tables—a perfect choice for hosting business dinners or special occasion celebrations.
I was particularly impressed with their open kitchen, which allows diners to observe the meticulous preparation of their signature dish: Peking Duck.
Service:
The staff was attentive and knowledgeable. However, I couldn’t shake the feeling that their actions were more out of obligation than genuine warmth. You know, the smiles seemed a bit rehearsed.
Even as I write this article now, I still feel some pressure to maintain professionalism and not be too casual.
Drink:
I absolutely loved their never-ending selection of wines from all around the world!!
Price:££££
Some may find the menu slightly on the expensive side. But remember, love is often worth the splurge, and at Gouqi, it’s a love affair with Chinese cuisine.
What I Ordered:
*Supreme Royal Dim Sum Platter
The first impression of the platter was nothing short of majestic. The selection of dim sum was artfully arranged, showcasing a variety of colors, shapes, and textures that invited me to explore its treasures. Each piece of dim sum was skillfully crafted with precision, and this craftsmanship was evident in both taste and texture.
Pan-Fried Chicken and Chive Dumpling
The pan-frying process lent them a satisfyingly crispy bottom, while the top remained pleasantly chewy. The contrast between the crispy and tender elements created a satisfying mouthfeel that made each bite a pleasure.
Five Spice Crispy Chicken with Thai Basil
It was a fusion of flavors and textures, with the clever addition of Thai basil. However, when compared to the other dishes, it didn’t stand out as particularly memorable. Nonetheless, it was still quite good!
*Gouqi’s Signature Roast Duck
The crispy, bronzed skin was a masterpiece! A perfect balance of crispy texture and rich, succulent duck meat beneath. The layers of fat beneath the skin added a luxurious, melt-in-the-mouth quality.
Its heavenly flavors, exquisite textures, and deep-rooted tradition make it a must-try for anyone with a love for exceptional cuisine.
Let me reveal their secret with Mr. Alan’s permission.
You’re already dialing their number to pre-order that Peking Duck, aren’t you? Go on, give in to the temptation.
Honey-Glazed Iberico Char Siu
The sweet honey enveloped the tender Iberico pork. Each bite of the pork carried the essence of the glaze, creating a delightful flavors.
Kung Pao Chicken with Dried Chilli and Cashew Nut
The tender chunks of chicken were perfectly cooked, and the cashew nuts and vegetables added a satisfying crunch.
I also ordered the prawn version, which was equally delicious – crispy fried and oh-so-good!
Scottish Steamed Fish – Hong Kong Style Sauce
The fish was tender and moist, thanks to the gentle steaming process. The sauce was a standout feature of the dish, with subtle umami undertones that complemented the delicate flavor of the Scottish fish without overpowering it. Additionally, the garnish on top was refreshing and provided excellent accompaniment.
Braised Yu Xiang Aubergine in Claypot
It is a comforting and flavorful traditional Chinese dish. Its rich flavors, tender aubergines, crunchy ginger, and well-executed Yu Xiang sauce make it a delightful choice for those looking to savor the warmth and authenticity of Chinese comfort food.
Golden Egg Fried Rice
Egg Fried Rice is a shining example of how simplicity can work culinary magic. Its familiar flavors, pleasing textures, and versatility make it a reliable choice to complement main dishes and provide comfort.
Gouqi Symphony No.5
Am I attending my first London Fashion Week catwalk? It’s a sweet symphony of flavors, textures, and creativity that leaves diners with a sense of awe and satisfaction.
My favorite was the Mango, Black Sesame, and Passion Fruit dessert. The tropical sweetness of mango met the earthy richness of black sesame, with the zesty passion fruit adding a bright and tangy twist.
Conclusion:
Gouqi is a remarkable addition to London’s culinary landscape, providing an authentic Chinese dining experience that’s certain to satisfy both connoisseurs of Chinese cuisine and newcomers eager to explore its flavors. With its exquisite dishes, attentive service, and elegant ambiance, Gouqi unquestionably deserves a place on your must-visit list.
While it may not be an everyday choice for everyone, for those seeking a culinary romance infused with authentic Chinese allure, it’s an undeniable match made in foodie heaven.
