Royal Delays, Regal Flavours
The Princess Royal in Notting Hill has all the makings of a neighborhood gem: a beautiful terrace made for long, lazy dining, a menu that’s rustic but polished, and a few dishes that really shine.
I went with a friend for a casual Saturday dinner, and while the food mostly charmed, the service dragged its heels. Would I go back? Yes – but next time for a sun-soaked lunch or a round of drinks rather than dinner.
Atmosphere:
The terrace was the undisputed star of the evening. Leafy, cozy, and just the right amount of chic – the perfect setting for catching up over something cold. It has that “mini weekend escape” energy, even though you’re only steps from Portobello.
Inside, the pub is stylish without trying too hard – the classic London gastropub look. But honestly, if the weather allows, you always want to be outside.

Service:
Well… let’s just say my patience was tested (and patience is not my strong suit). Our table seemed to be low on their priority list, and getting anything required a wait. Strangely, the only thing that came quickly was the bill.
That said, one shining moment: the lovely lady who took a perfect photo of us, the only one who left us smiling. As for the 15% service charge automatically added? Princess Royal, you’re cheeky.
Drinks:
The drinks list is nicely curated – crisp wines, good beers, and a few safe-but-solid options. Nothing groundbreaking, but a chilled glass of white on that terrace hits just right. It’s less about what you’re drinking and more about where you’re drinking it.
Price: ££
For Notting Hill, the prices felt fair. The only thing that soured it was that sneaky 15% service charge, which didn’t quite match the level of service we got..
What I Odreded:
Focaccia, Extra Virgin Olive Oil

A simple starter, but one that sets the tone. Warm, pillowy focaccia with that fragrant, peppery hit of good olive oil. Not life-changing, but satisfying in its rustic simplicity.
*Chicken Milanese, Confit Tomatoes, Salsa Verde

This was my absolute favorite. Crispy, golden, beautifully cooked chicken – crunchy on the outside, juicy inside – paired with the brightness of confit tomatoes and a punchy salsa verde. It had that “I’d order this again tomorrow” quality. Worth every penny.
Although… can we talk about the lemon? Not sure if it was meant to be quite that charred – rustic chic, or kitchen accident?
The Princess Parmigiana

Comfort food through and through. Layers of aubergine, rich tomato, and oozy cheese, baked until gloriously bubbling. Hearty, satisfying, and pure indulgence – though I have to admit, it leaned a touch on the sweet side for my taste.
Braised Peas & Lettuce

A side that surprised me. Sweet peas and soft, buttery lettuce, gently braised – light and fresh, a good balance against the richness of the mains. A clever little plate that I’d happily order again.
Soft Serve Sundae: English Strawberry & Almond Crumble

The meal ended on a sweet high. Creamy soft serve, sharp-sweet strawberries, and a crunchy almond crumble that gave it texture and flair. A playful finish of the evening.
Concluison:
The Princess Royal is a place where the terrace does a lot of heavy lifting, the food can shine, but the service desperately needs to catch up.
If you’re after a stylish Notting Hill spot to linger with a friend, nice drinks, and maybe a sundae to finish, you’ll be happy.
Tips:
- They welcome both dogs and babies, making it a solid pick for family brunches or a lazy afternoon with your pup in tow.
- Their menu is available here, and the weekend brunch – complete with Sunday roasts and hearty breakfasts – definitely caught my eye.
- It’s not just a pub, but also a rather cute little hotel. Chic terrace by day, cozy stay by night. Can be good for a wedding after party…?
